This humble offset guitar marks a major milestone for me: it was my first attempt at making a complete electric guitar, body and neck, using a CNC.
Before this Jazzmaster-inspired guitar, I had only ever built a body with hand tools. Designing and fabricating a neck seemed daunting. At the same time, it felt like the perfect excuse to dust off the 3D modeling skills I picked up when studying Industrial Design. I modeled the guitar in Rhino 3D, created the machining tool paths in Fusion 360, and brought it to life at a makerspace located in north Austin.
The final assembly happened right in the middle of the pandemic. I actually used my coffee table as a workbench to install and dress the stainless steel frets and apply the final oil finish.
